Clerkenwell House

This project entailed the thoughtful and sensitive re-integration of a formerly self-contained basement flat into the Grade II listed Georgian terraced house above, restoring the dwelling to its original, unified grandeur. Historically, the property had been subdivided into three separate flats; the two upper units were previously consolidated, and this final phase completes the return to the house’s authentic, harmonious form.

Through careful spatial reconfiguration a new internal staircase was introduced to provide seamless access between the main house and basement floor. At the same time, the basement retains its autonomy as an independent guest residence, complete with its own private external entrance.

The design replaces a cramped, low-quality apartment with a refined, contemporary living space, reinstating the spine wall in its original location. A cohesive palette of materials centred on oak has been carefully applied across flooring, doors, cabinetry and joinery, creating a unified and sculptural interior. To enhance comfort and efficiency, existing windows were upgraded with high-performance heritage-style double glazing, and improvements were made to the basement's thermal envelope.
