Murray Mews

The scheme is located in Murray Mews in Camden, characterized by its distinctive mid-20th-century mews architecture, where former service buildings and garages have been sensitively reimagined into contemporary residences by modern architects, many of them for the architects themselves to live in.

The scheme builds upon that architectural heritage by introducing a refined, contextually responsive design that respects the scale and rhythm of the mews while prioritising sustainability, high-quality materials and thoughtfully articulated façades.

The proposal enhances the site while adhering to strict height and excavation constraints. The scheme is defined by a maximum excavation depth of 1.8 meters and a building height that harmonizes with the adjacent property, ensuring contextual sensitivity. The design comprises four levels of contemporary residential accommodation, optimizing spatial efficiency and site potential.

The spatial organization prioritizes daylighting and sightlines, with all units benefitting from dual or triple aspects. A generously proportioned courtyard and private terraces contribute to a well-balanced provision of amenity space, fostering a high-quality living environment.

Highly insulated thermal envelope, triple glazing and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery will create 4 fossil fuel free, warm and comfortable homes. The proposal also exceeds Camden’s standards for cycle storage, promoting sustainable mobility, alongside a dedicated and discreetly integrated refuse storage facility.

By balancing contemporary living with the historic character of the street, the proposal enhances the architectural continuity of Murray Mews, reinforcing its evolution as a model of sensitive urban infill.
